Volkswagen updated the Tiguan last fall, but only the smaller, European version. Now, the larger Allspace (the only version sold in the U.S.) is getting the same treatment. A full 22 cm longer than the standard crossover, the Tiguan Allspace offers up to three rows of seats and 1,920 liters of cargo space.
Volkswagen says the update will mean new
control and assist systems, a wide range of online services, and improved
infotainment software. Although it’s still hiding what the vehicle will look
like, the automaker has admitted that the update will bring pretty much the
same updates as it did with the short wheelbase Tiguan.
As the teaser shows, the taillights have
been updated. The facelift also brought new headlights with an LED light
signature that look more like the Mk8 Golf’s. Restyled bumpers fore and aft
joined a centrally located Tiguan badge and a new 4Motion badge also helped
differentiate the new Tiguan from the old.
Inside, the updated short-wheelbase Tiguan
got modest updates, too. A new steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons came
with new touch-sensitive buttons along the side of the infotainment screen. New
natural voice controls, multi-phone pairings, and wireless app connect helped
you connect to the car, while an 8- or 10.25-inch instrument cluster provided
information.
The Allspace is the more popular version
of the Tiguan and is the only one sold in the U.S. The versions of the
crossover sold in North and South America, as well as in Europe will be built
in Puebla, Mexico. China’s Tiguan L will be built in Shanghai. Volkswagen will
unveil the new Tiguan Allspace on May 12 and pre-sales are set to begin in the
coming weeks.
