Nissan has been spied testing a pair of camouflage 2022 Z prototypes in Phoenix, Arizona as it gears up to launch the long-awaited sports car. These photos were snapped by CarScoops reader Nick Decant and come a few weeks after leaked images first showcased the Z prototype without any camouflage. Nonetheless, Nissan clearly still feels the need to keep the exterior design of the new sports car a secret, but there is simply no hiding that identifiable shape.
The two prototypes were spotted driving in
unison and according to Nick, the car sounds like a raspy Infiniti Q60 Red
Sport 400 which is fitting as that is the car the new Z borrows its engine
from. Both prototypes had black wheels and red calipers and were running
Michigan plates.
The United States will likely prove to be
the biggest market for the Nissan Z so it’s little surprise that the Japanese
car manufacturer is conducting lots of testing on U.S. roads. As mentioned, the
2022 Z will have the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 as flagship Q50 and
Q60 models and according to reports, customers will be able to choose between
either a Mercedes-sourced 9G-Tronic automatic transmission or the same
six-speed manual as the 370Z. Power will be sent exclusively to the rear wheels
and if the car has around 400 hp, as it’s expected to, it should easily
outperform the Toyota Supra while potentially undercutting it on price.
Nissan is expected to unveil the
production-ready 2022 Z in the second half of the year – and, if the latest
report turns out to be accurate, this could happen on November 15.
