Luca de Meo, the new boss of Renault, bets it all on retro looks: a production car based on the Renault 5 Concept is already underway to the market, and a Renault 4 Concept was recently discovered in a patent database.
The original Renault 4 was a
front-wheel-drive car with versatile suspension, a minimalistic interior and a
unique drivetrain layout that put the gearbox ahead of the engine. The model
used to be produced in 1961–1992 in various countries throughout the world, and
the total production quantity exceeded 8 million.
The continuation model shown on the patent
images sports a flat hood, familiar-looking doorframes and c-pillars,
headlights merged with the radiator grille, and vertical bumper inserts. The
black body kit and the generous ride height suggest some off-road usability.
In possibly related news, the company
patented the trademark “Renault 4Ever” not long ago. It also reminisced about
the model number 4 when working on the first-generation Duster. Details are
scarce right now, and it is perhaps too early to predict when the concept car
comes out, let alone production car.
