BMW has come up with a mid-life facelift for its X3 and X4 crossovers that include the range-topping M variants that benefit from the same styling and tech revisions as the regular models adding improved performance numbers into the mix.
Kicking off with what will interest buyers of these two M models the most, the S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six has been updated with a 3D-printed cylinder head core and a forged lightweight crankshaft from the M3 and M4. This results in a 13 lb-ft boost in peak torque for the standard X3 M / X4 M and 37 lb-ft in the Competition variants of both SUVs, while maintaining the same horsepower figures.
Total output now stands at 473 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque for the regular models and 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft for the Competition versions. BMW claims that the new increased torque production lowers the 0-96 km/h acceleration time of the X3 M and X4 M from 4.1 seconds to 3.9 seconds and from 4.0 seconds to 3.7 seconds for the Competition package-equipped X3 M and X4 M. In either case, top speed is an electronically limited 250 km/h, which is increased to 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.
Power continues to be transferred to the rear-biased all-wheel drive system via a ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission, with the M models boasting a unique chassis setup and parts. The grille up front has grown in size again to keep up with other members of the BMW family, while the LED headlamps on both SUVs are slimmer and more angrier looking, something that makes the double kidneys look even bigger than before. At the back, the Germans followed a similar recipe giving the taillights a more modern / convoluted redo on the X3, less so on the X4, while the bodykit was slightly revised as well.
Moving into the cabin, there are new seats for the M models, an updated center console with redesigned air-vents, and as an option for the first time, what BMW calls the “Driving Assistance Professional.” The latter makes use of the digital instrument panel and head-up display to inform drivers about their surroundings.
The 2022 X3 M and X4 M will arrive in U.S. dealerships this September with prices for the regular versions starting from US$ 69,900 and US$ 73,400 before a US$ 995 destination fee. Further details, including prices for the Competition package will be announced soon.
