The 2022 Honda Civic lineup is expanding as the company has introduced the new hatchback variant. The model unsurprisingly follows in the footsteps of the redesigned sedan and adopts a more mature, if boring, design. Of course, it’s not an exact copy as the hatchback is distinguished by an angular liftgate and a unique rear end with an integrated spoiler. The five-door model also features sleeker taillights, which are connected by a thin strip that follows the contours of the spoiler.

The rest of the car largely echoes the sedan and there’s a familiar interior with a modern design. Drivers sit behind a 7- or 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and will find a freestanding 7- or 9-inch infotainment system off to the side.  The latter sports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and the display resides above stylish honeycomb mesh trim.

More importantly, the hatchback is more practical than the sedan as there are 60/40 split folding rear seats that allow for a generous cargo compartment.  Honda didn’t say how generous, but the company noted rear seat passengers will find nearly 36 mm of additional legroom.

Under the hood, there are two different engines including an entry-level 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 158 hp and 187 Nm of torque.  Customers can also opt for a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 180 hp and 240 Nm of torque. The engines can be connected to either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.  However, the short-throw six-speed is restricted to Sport and Sport Touring trims.

Speaking of performance, the hatchback benefits from a stiffer structure, a retuned suspension and a revised steering system that promises to provide better feedback. The changes also help to improve the model’s ride and handling while also reducing noise, vibration and harshness. Last but not least, drivers will find an upgraded Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance systems. It features a more powerful processor, upgraded software and a camera with a wider field of view. Thanks to these changes, owners can expect quicker reactions and more natural braking when using Adaptive Cruise Control. Furthermore, the Lane Keeping Assist system promises to deliver more linear and natural steering.

Unlike its predecessor that was imported from the UK, the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback will be built here in America in Greensburg, Indiana and the model is slated to go on sale this September. Prices haven’t been announced yet, but expect them to start from under US$ 20,000 for the base LX topping out at around US$ 30,000 for the Sport Touring. And that’s not all as the range will be expanded with a new Civic Si rumored to launch in October and, of course, next year’s Civic Type R
