Opel has released the first batch of teaser images for the all-new 2022 Astra hatchback, revealing the new Mokka-inspired styling of the VW Golf-rivaling hatchback. The new Astra will unsurprisingly get the latest “Opel Vizor” treatment upfront, featuring LED headlights with slim DRLs and a black panel between them for that characteristic look of new Opel models.
In addition, the cabin of the new Astra will feature what Opel calls a “Pure Panel” digital cockpit, pairing two widescreen displays under fully glazed surfaces in a horizontal format pointed towards the driver. Opel also says that they have reduced the number of physical controls to just the core functions, with “finely crafted keys”, added new ergonomic front seats and there’s a newly designed steering wheel.
The striking styling of the upcoming Opel Astra is not going to be the only highlight; Opel will offer the new Astra with an electrified powertrain as well, most likely a plug-in hybrid unit, alongside petrol and diesel variants. There’s even talk about a more powerful plug-in hybrid variant with all-wheel drive and 296 HP. The new Opel Astra is based on PSA’s EMP2 platform, which is also used for models like the Peugeot 308. It will be available in both hatchback and estate body styles, as confirmed by Opel.
Production of the all-new Opel Astra will begin this year at the carmaker’s factory in Russelsheim in Germany.
