Ferrari has been testing its upcoming model, a plug-in hybrid V6 supercar that will be seen as sacrilege to some and a necessary move forward to others. Hidden under heavy camouflage, though, our latest spy shots give a little more insight into what’s going on in Maranello. Codenamed the F171, we saw it testing in late May with brighter dazzle camouflage that not only confused the eye but also appears to change the shape of the car. Now, the car is back with new camouflage that reveals a little more of the front grille area and a little more of the rear.
Starting at the back, the F171 still has those fake exhaust outlets that our spy photographers warned us about last time. This time, the light allows us to see into the mesh part of the rear camouflage to which it’s attached. Ferrari has done a little less work smoothing out the rest of the camouflage, though, and we can now see where the additions are added on. Take, for example, the rear wheel arch where the natural curves of the lower body run into the halting angles of the camo. At the front, meanwhile, the smoother camouflage from the last shots that had cut-out air inlets below the lights has been removed and what looks like the car’s real bumper can be seen near the ground. The shape is now more reminiscent of the Ferrari 488, albeit a little more flowing.
Unfortunately, there’s still quite a bit of camouflage going on here, so many of the shapes are still obscured to us. Similarly, many of the technical details are still secrets, but rumors suggest that the car will be rear-wheel-drive only, unlike the SF90 hybrid. Although it will reportedly get the ability to move under electric power exclusively (15 to 19 miles of range, supposedly), somewhat like the McLaren Artura, the electric motors will be prioritized for supplementing the engine’s performance, filling in where the turbos might lag and helping the F171 off the line.
Power is tipped to come in at around 700 hp, which would make sense since the Artura makes 671 hp. The driveline will be an important one, though, since it will also be the one used in the Purosangue SUV. Those eager to find out more about this Ferrari, though, we won’t have to wait too much longer as the F171 is expected to get its full unveiling before the end of 2021.
