Full U.S. details for the 2022 VW Golf R have been announced at the Chicago Auto Show, including its price. Unveiled for overseas markets a number of months ago, the U.S.-spec Mk8 Golf R features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection engine pumping out 315 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque with the DSG transmission or 280 lb-ft with the six-speed manual.

Like its predecessor, the Golf R features all-wheel drive but now has a new 4Motion system that includes rear-axle torque vectoring. This system uses a rear differential with two multi-plate clutches that can distribute up to 100 per cent of the rear torque to an individual rear wheel. VW hasn’t released acceleration details for the U.S.-spec Golf R but says it has an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Found in the cabin of the Golf R are very similar components to the 2022 Golf GTI, also announced at the Chicago Auto Show. As such, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster is standard, as is a 10-inch infotainment screen. The cockpit also features touch panels for the lighting, defrost, HVAC, and audio functions and a Head-Up display is optional.

A plethora of safety features also come standard. These include semi-automated driving assistance, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Emergency Assist, Adaptive Front-lighting System, Park Assist with Park Distance Control, and Dynamic Road Sign Display.

The 2022 VW Golf R is only available in a single, fully-loaded trim in the U.S. priced at US$ 43,645 with the manual transmission and US$ 44,445 with the DSG, excluding a US$ 995 destination fee. Key features of the car include Nappa leather sport seats, front and rear heated seats, ventilated front seats, three-zone Climatronic Touch automatic climate control, a nine-speaker Harmon Kardon 480-watt audio system, wireless charging, and four USB-C ports.

As with the 2022 Golf GTI, the Golf R will reach U.S. dealers in Q4 2021.
