Cupra announced today that it will be showing off “its most radical interpretation of an urban electric performance car” next week. The car will debut in a digital event and will then be shown at IAA Munich early next month. The car, only teased for now, features a massive wing at the back whose vertical spars are lined with brake lights. A short teaser video also suggests that the car is covered in a highly reflective pattern of colorful dots.
Industry rumors suggest that this might be our first glimpse of the upcoming smallest vehicle on the MEB platform. Perhaps better known as the VW ID.2, Cupra’s repeated use of the word “urban” would suggest that this will be a small vehicle. Volkswagen is reportedly aiming for a sub-€ 20,000 (US$ 23,511) price tag for the less racy version of the car.
Unfortunately, the UrbanRebel production car is destined for the semi-distnat future. Cupra said that the concept will give an idea of what the brand is planning for a production car set to hit the roads in 2025. If, indeed, this is our first look at the tiny ID.2, you can expect VW, Skoda, and even Audi versions to follow, too. Those versions of the car may arrive as soon as 2023. The production cars will be toned down, sadly, because Cupra has decided to “present the vision of its 100% all-electric vehicle first as a race car with bold, thrilling, sharp looks.
Whatever comes of the UrbanRebel, IAA Munich is set to run from September 7 to 12.
