Renault is living the van life as the company has unveiled the Trafic SpaceNomad and Hippie Caviar Hotel concept. Set to be shown at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the models are camper vans which are being billed as “essential after a period of repeated lockdowns” due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Starting with the Trafic SpaceNomad, it builds on a trial of the previous van in Switzerland. Since the test was a success, the company is expanding availability of the camper van to Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France and Germany in 2022.
As the name suggests, the model is based on the new Trafic and is available in 5,080 mm and 5,480 mm lengths. The van also offers four- and five-seat configurations as well as manual and automatic transmissions and engines with outputs ranging from 108-168 hp. More importantly, the Trafic SpaceNomad is equipped with a pop-up roof tent and a rear bench seat that transforms into a bed. This enables up to four people to sleep in the van.
When it comes time to eat, owners will find a “fully equipped kitchen” with a two-burner stove, a 49 liter refrigerator, and a sink with an integrated tap. There’s even a stand-alone table that can be used inside or outside the vehicle. Other highlights include swiveling front seats, an outdoor shower and an awning that measures 86.6 x 92.5 inches (220 x 235 cm). Buyers will also find LED interior lights and a 2,000 watt heater to keep things toasty even on the chilliest nights. They’re joined by a wireless smartphone charger and an 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
Previewed earlier this month, the Hippie Caviar Hotel is a “hippie-chic” camper van concept inspired by the 1960s. It’s based on the upcoming Trafic EV and features a two-tone exterior with a rooftop terrace. The latter offers a lounge-like atmosphere as tables and backrests can be installed on the roof to create a relaxing environment.
Renault didn’t say much about the concept, but it features a stylish cabin with linen and wool upholstery. The back of the van is separated from the front and it looks like a stylish living room as occupants will find yellow carpeting, a bench seat and what appears to be an elegant storage compartment.
More notably, the concept features an adjustable bed that measures 195 cm long and 145 cmwide. It can be extended out the back of the vehicle, while “draperies provide privacy and protection from the weather.” Renault was coy about the electric powertrain, but the camper van is designed to be accompanied by a “logistics container” that features a bathroom, shower and recharging point. It would be dropped off at your camp site and Renault envisions having a drone make deliveries to provide a five-star experience that mimics luxury hotels.
