After the MG Cyberster electric roadster, the company launched the MG Maze, a futuristic EV concept inspired by gaming. The concept car was presented by SAIC Design which is responsible for all MG models. The project was created during the pandemic/lockdown with the following brief: “Play is important. Discovery is important. Adventure is important”. The exterior design is inspired by gaming hardware, thus the huge glass surfaces revealing a big part of the internals. In the same way, the chassis housing the electric motors and the interchangeable battery is designed with a plug-and-play style, while the GPU, CPU, and cooling fans are also visible like in a high-end PC.
Overall, Maze has an aerodynamic one-box silhouette, minimal overhangs, heavily sculpted front/rear ends, prominent aerodynamic features, and large-diameter wheels. The front canopy made of full polycarbonate is opening upwards revealing the equally futuristic two-seater interior. The ZERO gravity seat design includes high-tech fabric cushioning in shades of purple and pink.
Inspired by the culture of gaming and in a quest to reimagine mobile games for the 21st century, the MG Maze allows the drivers to become players in a real-world treasure hunt. More specifically, using his/her smartphone and the sophisticated User Interface that is covering the whole front of the car showing a 3D map, avatar status, overlaying images, and mission information, the driver/player can discover digital art pieces all around the city.
In this way, SAIC design believes they will bring back driving fun to electrified cars. As you can imagine, the MG Maze is not previewing a production car but works as a design study inspiring designers for the distant future.
