Hot on the heels of the fourth-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 being unveiled, a report has surfaced online suggesting that Chevrolet is also planning a significant upgrade for the 2023 Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models. Citing unnamed sources, The Fast Lane Truck reports that the duo will feature an updated version of the automaker’s 6.6-liter turbo-diesel Duramax V8. This engine could pump out as much as 505 hp and 1,471 Nm of torque, giving the new Silverado and Sierra HD the most power of any pickup in their segment.
To put these figures into perspective, the most potent version of Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel delivers 475 hp and 1,423 Nm while the 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six diesel used by Ram is rated at 420 hp and 1,457 Nm. Chevy’s current 6.6-liter Duramax V8 diesel was introduced for the 2017 model year and is rated at 445 hp and 1,233 Nm, meaning it has slightly less grunt than its main rivals. The same report adds that the 2023 Silverado HD and Sierra HD will also feature an upgraded automatic transmission and rear differential to handle the extra grunt.
As for the smaller Silverado 1500 that was recently updated for 2022, its exterior design hasn’t been updated all that much but significant changes have been made to its interior. For example, it is loaded with higher quality materials and a host of new technologies including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.4-inch infotainment system. The truck also features built-in Google compatibility.
