It’s been known for quite some time now that Rivian is building 100,000 electric delivery vans for Amazon, but it has only just been revealed that the vans will be produced in a number of different guises. A VIN document filed by Rivian with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and picked up by the Rivian Owners Forum reveal that there will eventually be three differently sized delivery vans produced by the automaker. The first two will be dubbed the 500 Van and 700 Van, with the number being used as a reference for the cubic-foot capacity.
A larger 900 Van is also in the works and,
interestingly, the 500 Van will be produced in both left- and right-hand drive
configurations. The VIN document also reveals that the vans will be produced in
S (Service) and Z (Amazon) trim levels, perhaps suggesting that S models will
be made available to fleet customers other than Amazon.
Underpinning Rivian’s van is the same
basic skateboard architecture as the R1T and R1S, but unlike the truck and SUV,
it will not be available in quad-motor guise. Instead, Rivian will offer the
van in single-motor front-wheel drive, dual-motor front wheel drive, and
dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations.
Rivian has not yet provided details about
the battery capacities of the different variants but Autoblog reports that the
500 Van and 700 Van will travel around 150 miles on a charge. The larger 900 Van
will have a slightly smaller battery and a range of around 120 miles and will
be used in areas with high-population densities.
