The next-gen Chevy Corvette C8 has been in production for more than a year now, and a new Z06 version joined the lineup not long ago, but the flagship spec called the E-Ray Hybrid is still in development.

The latest bunch of spy photos reveals what looks like a regular, undisguised Z06 ‘Vette, but a glance at the license plate reveals that it is actually a pre-production test car. Surprise, surprise! The manufacturer surely did a lot to confuse us here, but it would appear that this Z06 is none other than the upcoming E-Ray Hybrid under cover.

Note also that the sports coupe lacks the Z06’s signature middle tailpipes, instead sporting corner exhaust tips like those on Stingray models. This is relevant because of the persistent rumors that the hybrid Corvette will reuse the V8 engine of the latest Stingray. An electric motor will allegedly be added to the front axle, resulting in the history’s first AWD ‘Vette. The model should premiere sometime in late 2022, so there is still plenty of time for speculation.
