Renault published an interior sketch of the upcoming Austral SUV, which is set to be the successor of the Kadjar. The model is expected to debut sometime in the coming weeks/months with an electrified engine lineup including mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains.
The Renault Austral inherits the screen layout
introduced by the Megane E-Tech, with a digital instrument cluster and a large
OpenR infotainment touchscreen in portrait orientation. According to Renault,
the L-shaped panel is one of the largest screens on the market, with a total
display area of 24.3 inches. The system is running Google Automotive Services,
supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and incorporates Google
Maps. The automaker claims that 90 percent of the features most users need
every day are one or two clicks away. Furthermore, the anti-reflective coating
eliminates the need for a visor.
Besides the screen, we can see a squared-off steering wheel
that looks quite futuristic, slim air vents, red accents, ambient lighting, and
a high-mounted center tunnel. Overall the design looks significantly more
modern than the outgoing Kadjar, while we also expect an improvement in the fit
and finish. The five-seater cabin of the Austral is modular, with multiple
storage compartments that could fit more than 30 lt. These include the sliding
armrest and two storage compartments in the center console.
The designer’s goal was to create a “cocoon effect” and make
the passengers feel safe. Thus they added flecked fabric decks on the roofliner
and windscreen post, and more comfortable and ergonomic seats making it easier
for passengers to interact with each other. Thanks to the elimination of a
transmission tunnel, the rear passengers have more room, with the rear bench
sliding and folding. In a previous teaser, Renault said that they have improved
soundproofing and added a list of ADAS features.
The Renault Austral is based on the CMF-CD3 platform and
will have a length of 4.51 meters. It will be offered exclusively with
electrified petrol powertrains producing up to 200 hp. Renault has already
started testing on public roads with camouflaged prototypes roaming the streets
of Europe.
