Despite what you may be thinking, you’re not looking at an old Peugeot 408. Instead, you’re looking at the latest EV from China, dubbed the Dongfeng Fukang ES600. The second-generation Peugeot 408 has been sold in China through Dongfeng for a number of years now, offered exclusively with a 1.6-liter inline-four petrol engine. Evidently, the Chinese automaker thought the sedan would be well-suited to an electric powertrain so they have updated it with just that.
Documents filed with the Ministry of
Industry and Information Technology revealed that the ES600 has been equipped
with a lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, although its capacity isn’t known.
This battery pack drives a single electric motor producing 147 hp. No range
figures have been announced.
Additional information reveals that the
sedan is 4,750 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,518 mm tall with a 2,730 mm
wheelbase. We also know that it tips the scales at 1,573 kg and has
a top speed of 140 km/h. From a visual perspective, very few changes
have been made from an ICE-powered Peugeot 408. With that being said, the front
end does now include a faux front grille. You may also notice that the Dongfeng
Fukang ES600 uses the headlights and taillights of the pre-facelift 408, rather
than the facelifted model that was introduced in 2018.
So far, no pricing or availability details
for the electric sedan have been announced.
