Volvo today announced that it is adding a special Black Edition to the range of available packages for the S60 sedan. Joining the ranks of Black Edition models, it adds darkened design elements for a more sinister look. Limited to just 450 examples for 2022, it builds on the standard car and is available for the mild-hybrid S60 Momentum and R-Design trims, as well as the plug-in hybrid S60 Recharge.

It adds 19-inch high gloss black wheels and standard metallic paint. It also gets a high-gloss black grille, Volvo badge, and grille slash, as well as high-gloss exterior trim, which makes it distinct from all other S60 models. At the back, all of the badging, including the model name, the Volvo wordmark, and the motor designation are also finished in black, while darkened tailpipes round out the look.

The S60 Black Edition is only available in two colors. For those who love a total black look, the S60 Black Edition can be trimmed in Onyx Black Metallic, while those who love contrast can have the body finished in Crystal White Metallic paint. Built at Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina plant, the S60 Black Edition was developed specifically for the U.S. market and was conceived at Volvo’s US design studio in California. The project was led by Volvo Cars USA head of design Eric Beak and it was developed and approved in near-record time, with the first study beginning just 13 months ago.

The timeline for its move to market was accelerated once executives saw the car in November 2021 because they had “fallen in love” with the design. As such, it will be arriving at select dealers this spring, and customers who are interested in the Black Edition should contact their dealers for availability. Prices start at under US$ 40,000 depending on trim.
