While SUVs and crossovers are all the rage nowadays, Cadillac is working on an all-new generation of the CT6 sedan and has been spied testing it for the very first time. The American carmaker still sells the luxury sedan in China and that’s where the new model is believed to be in development for, despite being caught testing in Michigan.
It is understood that the new CT6 will be
built on the automaker’s VSS-R platform that will underpin rear-wheel drive
based models and incorporates elements from the Omega platform. While we don’t
yet know the exact measurements for the new car, it appears to be similar in
size to the first-generation CT6. Some notable styling changes are thought to
have been made, even though many of them are hidden by the camouflage and thick
body cladding of this prototype. Up front, the sedan is expected to feature
dramatic headlights with horizontal and vertical elements, much like its
predecessor, albeit updated to look even more modern. Similar updates can be
expected with the taillights.
A handful of changes are also visible when
this new GT6 is viewed from the side. For example, the roofline is slightly
more coupe-like in appearance and the C-pillar is also much thinner. We do not
yet have any images showcasing the interior of the second-generation CT6 but it
will no doubt benefit from a number of technology upgrades, likely including
GM’s new Ultra Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, among other things.
A host of powertrains will be offered,
among them a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that could be coupled to a
48-volt mild-hybrid system. Sadly, the CT6 Blackwing will not make a return for
the car’s second generation, meaning there will not be a V8 model on offer. While
the chances of the new CT6 being offered here in the States are incredibly
slim, sedan lovers might take solace from the fact that, beyond the existing
CT4 and CT5, Cadillac is readying a new electric flagship called the Celestiq
which will be introduced this year.
