Although Alfa Romeo unveiled its new crossover, the Tonale, in February, at launch there was only a small collection of photos for interested readers to look through. Now, though, the brand has released a massive dump of new photos, all available below. New for 2023, the Tonale will arguably be Alfa Romeo’s most important vehicle in recent memory, as the brand hopes to double its sales with the small premium crossover. These new photos give us a better chance than ever to look at how closely to the concept the Tonale keeps and exactly how the Italian brand plans to take on the premium establishment.
Underpinned by an evolution of an FCA
platform, the new crossover uses aluminum, a widened track width, and
compatibility with electrified powertrains in order to win over new customers.
For North American customers, that will mean two powertrain options at launch,
one a conventional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 256 hp and 400 Nm of torque and the other a plug-in hybrid
that pairs a 1.3-liter engine to a dedicated motor that together make 272 hp.
European customers, meanwhile, will also
get a pair of hybrids that combine a 1.5-liter four-pot with a 48-volt 15 kW
(20.1 hp/20.3 PS) motor. These deliver 148 hp or 178 hp, depending on trim, and will be joined in certain markets by a
1.6-liter turbodiesel that makes 128 hp.
Inside, we have a better view of the
Amazon Alexa-equipped tablet infotainment system that’s 10.25 inches across.
The 12.5-inch instrument display, meanwhile, sits under a familiar double cowl
shade. With dual-zone air conditioning, the option for ventilated and heated
seats, as well as a 14-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, the new Tonale
should fit right in with the premium fare against which it is fighting.
