Toyota today confirmed that it is working on a new larger three-row SUV called the Grand Highlander. It added that it will unveil the new vehicle on February 8, ahead of the 2023 Chicago Auto Show. The Japanese carmaker said that the new model will expand the Highlander nameplate, which was first introduced in 2001. The three-row Grand Highlander will be “equipped for family adventures” and will be the “perfect addition” to the Toyota lineup, likely filling the gap between the standard Highlander and the bigger, body-on-frame Sequoia.

Along with the date of the unveiling, Toyota also gave us a hint as to what the vehicle will look like thanks to a darkened teaser image. It shows that the full “Grand Highlander” name will be spelled across the rear of the SUV and suggests that the model will get its own two-stripe taillights as well as a new tailgate to differentiate it from the smaller Highlander. In addition, we can see that the model shown here is a high-trim Platinum model, and that it has a “Hybrid Max” powertrain. That name was recently seen on the range-topping Crown Platinum and, for that model, it combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor at the front to maximize torque production. All in, the powertrain makes 340 hp and 542 Nm of torque.

We first became aware of the Grand Highlander when Toyota’s trademark for the name was published in January 2021. Since then, we’ve seen the SUV testing on public roads. Those photos suggest that the new model will be a larger version of the Highlander designed to offer large SUV dimensions with crossover-like handling dynamics to make it a little more comfortable on the road than, say, the truck-based Sequoia. For those who want an even more comfortable experience, reports suggest that the Grand Highlander will spawn a Lexus version, as well. Named the TX, the new SUV should be largely similar to its Toyota counterpart, with added luxury and technology to justify a higher price.
