Japanese tuner Mugen revealed the first photos of the modified Honda ZR-V e:HEV that will debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon this year alongside a Honda Civic Type R concept. The tuner chose to modify the hybrid (e:HEV) variant of the ZR-V, which is the Japanese version of the US-spec HR-V. Following the recent teaser, Mugen published photos of the SUV revealing the sporty add-ons. Styling upgrades at the front include a more pronounced splitter with aluminum-style inserts, a pair of faux bumper intakes, vertical slits on the grille, and the Mugen emblem. The profile gets new mirror caps, aerodynamic side sill extensions, and a new set of multispoke bi-tone alloy wheels.

The tail certainly looks busier due to the special add-on above the taillights, the extension of the rear spoiler, and the fascia of the rear bumper. The latter has black extensions and quad exhaust tailpipes which sound like an odd choice for a hybrid urban SUV. Mind you, the JDM-spec Honda HR-V e:HEV is powered by an AWD hybrid system comprising a 2.0-liter engine, two electric motors, and a CVT gearbox.

Upgrades won’t be limited to aero and styling, as the tuner talks about “performance parts”, likely having to do with the suspension and the exhaust. The vehicle is referred to as a concept but it likely previews the tuning package that will soon become available for the ZR-V in Japan. We guess that at least some of the aforementioned upgrades will also be compatible with the EU-spec and Chinese-spec ZR-V variants, as well as with the US-spec HR-V.

As for the Honda Civic Type R Mugen Concept, the tuner remains coy on details, saying that the hot hatch will utilize its motorsports expertise and technology. We expect a custom aero package looking more aggressive than Honda’s own accessories, and hopefully some chassis tweaks / mechanical upgrades. Mugen will also exhibit two single-seaters from the Super Formula championship and showcase its new telemetry system for the series. The 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon will be held between January 13 and 15 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in the Chiba Prefecture just outside Tokyo.
