Smart is getting ready to expand its range with the addition of the #3 which appeared in a number of teaser sketches prior to its official debut that is scheduled for the Shanghai Auto Show in April. The Smart #3 is described as the coupe-SUV version of the #1 and will be offered in China, and Europe alongside its sibling. While we have already seen photos of the actual production vehicle since November 2022, thanks to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, this is the first official teaser.
According to the company, the Smart #3
adopts an “even sportier interpretation of the brand’s visual identity” than
the #1, again penned by the Mercedes-Benz global design team. This is evident
from the official sketches, showing a familiar face and muscular bodywork
combined with a sportier roofline and a more heavily tapered rear end for a
typical coupe-SUV stance. The interior will most likely be shared between the
two EVs, including the 12.8-inch infotainment, the 9.2-inch digital instrument
cluster, and the 10-inch heads-up display.
From Chinese documents, we know that the
smart #3 measures 4,440 mm which makes it 170 mm longer than the #1. Both are based on Geely’s sustainable Experience
Architecture (SEA) which is also used by other Geely brands including Volvo and
Zeekr.
We expect the new Smart crossover to share
the same fully electric powertrain with the smart #1, meaning that the RWD
variants could produce 268 hp and the AWD Brabus-branded
model could make as much as 422 hp. In both cases, the
battery has a capacity of 66 kWh. Despite being slightly larger, the Smart #2
could offer an incrementally better range than the #1 thanks to the expected
difference in aerodynamics.
