Although the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD will be road legal, it’s hard to deny that its giant rear wing, its Recaro race seats, and its advanced motorsports technology make the racetrack its natural environment. And now you can observe the new car where it belongs. A new video of the expectation-shattering supercar driving at Road Atlanta gives us what is perhaps our best look yet at the Mustang GTD. That’s not because it reveals anything particularly new about the car, but rather because it gives us an opportunity to hear the V8 howl.
The engine is described as a purpose-built
5.2-liter V8 that is equipped with a supercharger to help it generate 800 hp. Indeed, on the racetrack’s long straights, the high-pitch
whine of the forced induction system can be heard doing its thing. That’s not
the only intoxicating part of this video, though. Despite being powered by an
American V8, the Mustang GTD will be able to rev out to more than 7,500 RPM. As
this video proves, few things sound nicer than a bassy American eight-cylinder
engine being pushed to the upper limits of its rev range.
Helping the engine propel the Mustang GTD
to insane lap times around the world (a sub-seven-minute time is being targeted
on the Nürburgring) are chassis components derived from the Mustang GT3 racecar
program. That means a semi-active suspension system with adaptive spool valve
damper technology that offers hydraulically actuated spring rates and height
adjustment. A short-long arm front suspension will improve lateral stiffness,
while an integral link pushrod and rocker arm architecture at the rear is based
around a motorsport-inspired tubular spaceframe.
Big Brembo ceramic brakes hide behind
20-inch forged aluminum (or magnesium) wheels that will be wrapped in wide,
sticky tires. In concert with advanced aerodynamics, it should all help the
Mustang GTD stay glued to the road through corners. It will also all cost a
fair amount, with a starting price of US$ 300,000, but Ford promises that the
Mustang GTD will deliver racecar performance for the road.
