It seems that Ruf is going through a very creative period as, besides the CTR3 Evo supercar, they unveiled a second new model at the Monterey Car Week. The Ruf R Spyder is the tuner’s take on the 911 Speedster, featuring a number of bespoke components and plenty of GT3 bits.
The last Porsche 911 Speedster debuted in
2019 with a limited production of 1,948 units based on the 991.2 GT3. Unlike
this one, the Ruf R Spyder deletes the front windshield, side windows, and
manually-operated fabric top for a true open-air driving experience. It also
features a partition between the two seats, and a bespoke rear deck made of
carbon fiber integrating a vented ducktail spoiler. Other interesting features
are the mirror-replacing cameras mounted on the front fenders and the lack of
door handles.
The driver and the front passenger are
separated from the central spine, with each one having their own tiny windshield.
Interestingly, the characteristic clock that is usually mounted on the center
of the dashboard is poking out through a hole in the partition which also
houses an air intake for the engine at the back. Under the rear deck, Ruf added
a special compartment for the helmet, showing that this is a track-focused
build.
The Ruf R Spyder comes fitted with the
naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine from the GT3, mated to a 6-speed
manual gearbox. The mill features a valvetrain system with DLC-coated rocker
arms, plus variable intake and exhaust valve timing. Ruf didn’t announce the
power figures but the factory-spec engine produced up to 513 hp in the 991.2 GT3 RS. The chassis setup comprises McPherson struts at the
front and five-link rear suspension, while the car is fitted with
carbon-ceramic brakes.
Ruf didn’t say whether it plans on making
more units of the R Spyder, which would likely require the sacrifice of a 991.2
GT3. Whether the pictured example is a one-off or a limited-production offering
by the German tuner, the extent of exterior modifications makes us believe it
will come with a hefty price tag.
