Ford has finally announced how much power the 2024 F-150 Raptor R will make, and it’s more than its biggest competitor, the (dearly departed) Ram TRX. Thanks to better airflow, the super truck will make 720 hp and 868 Nm of torque. It seems a little silly to complain about the 2023 F-150 Raptor R’s already ludicrous 700 hp, but it was always odd that Ford engineers stopped just shy of the 702 hp that Ram TRX made.

Of course, two horsepower is negligible in this context (frankly, I wonder how much of an impact 20 hp will make) but it just felt like handing Ram a win. It’s only weirder that they stopped short of the TRX’s power rating when you consider how easy it was to add 20 horsepower. Ford says that the 2024 F-150 Raptor R’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 makes the extra power thanks to reduced inlet losses and an optimized calibration. While that’s a fairly modest change, the automaker’s engineers have been clever, because the extra power also results in a wider torque curve for better response.

In addition to the improved airflow, the 2024 F-150 Raptor R gets a unique power dome on the hood, 37-inch all-terrain tires, updated Fox Dual Live Valve shocks for more control, 24-inch coil springs, and an updated bumper for better desert performance. Ford’s super trucks have progressed so quickly over the years that it’s hard to remember how tepid the original Raptor was, by comparison. Introduced just 14 years ago, the first Raptor was powered by either a 310 hp 5.4-liter V8 or a 411 hp 6.2-liter V8.

Like its performance, prices for the 2024 F-150 Raptor have also grown. The base truck starts at US$ 79,975 while the V8-powered Raptor R’s MSRP is set at a whopping US$ 111,550.
