Toyota launched the PHEV version of the Crown Sport in Japan, which joins the existing self-charging hybrid with more power, a sportier chassis setup, and a zero-emission range. The first PHEV model in the Crown series is also the sportiest and most expensive yet, costing a full ¥ 1,750,000 (US$ 12,090) more than the HEV equivalent. The electrified powertrain combines the usual naturally aspirated 2.5-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The combined output of the PHEV is 302 hp, compared to the 231 hp of the HEV, with both featuring the E-Four electric 4WD system.
Furthermore, the larger capacity battery
of the PHEV which is positioned under the floor, allows a zero-emission range
of up to 90 km between charges. Toyota says that with a full tank of
gasoline and a fully recharged battery, the model has a driving range of over 1,200 km. A full charge will take 5.5 hours from a standard outlet,
while a rapid charger will take it to 80% in 38 minutes.
The Japanese automaker advertises the
sporty character of the electrified SUV, which is further accentuated in the
PHEV version. Toyota engineers added extra bracing on the floor for improved
rigidity, and tweaked the setup of the shock absorbers in the Adaptive Variable
Suspension system. Furthermore, the 20-inch ventilated discs with six-piston
brake calipers provide enough stopping power for the added weight. Note that
the PHEV tips the scales at 2,030 kg, compared to the 1,810 kg of the HEV but the extra power results in superior performance
figures. As a refresher, the 4,720 mm long Crown Sport is based
on the TNGA platform, as with the rest of the Crown-badged lineup.
Other amenities made possible by the PHEV
powertrain include the “My Room Mode” which allows occupants to use the A/C and
the audio system during charging, and the 1,500 Watt external power supply
function that can power devices or even an entire household during blackouts or
other emergencies. Visually, the Toyota Crown Sport PHEV RS is distinguished by
the different design of the 21-inch wheels which are finished in black, the red
brake calipers, and the PHEV badges. Inside, there is a combination of black
and red upholstery, with the sports seats and the red rear seatbelts adding a
sporty flavor.
The Toyota Crown Sport PHEV is already
available to order in Japan with a price tag of ¥ 7,650,000 (US$ 52,920) in the
flagship RS trim. This makes it significantly more expensive than the Crown
Sport HEV which is listed at ¥ 5,900,000 (US$ 40,814) although this one is in the
lower Z trim.
