BMW has been testing the redesigned X3 for more than a year, but the model is finally getting ready for its big debut. That will likely occur in the coming months but, in the meantime, spy photographers have snapped a heavily disguised prototype undergoing cold weather testing. Spied inside and out, the crossover sports an evolutionary design that incorporates a number of cues from the latest X1. As a result, it features a pronounced grille that is flanked by sweptback headlights. They’re joined by a new front bumper, which has a wide intake with a vertical support in the center.
Bigger changes occur aft of the A-pillar
as the X3 adopts streamlined bodywork and a softer shoulder line. We can also
see flush-mounted door handles, a sloping roof, and a familiar greenhouse. There
isn’t much to see out back, but the crossover appears to have an edgier
liftgate and expressive taillights. They’re joined by a massive BMW roundel and
a relocated license plate recess.
The interior pictures aren’t the best, but
we can see a new Curved Display that appears to combine a 12.3-inch digital
instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment system. They reside behind a
flat-bottom steering wheel, which has contrast stitching and an
architectural-like lower spoke. The center console has been completely revamped
and embraces a minimalist design. As part of the makeover, the crossover has
been equipped with a switch-like shifter and a new iDrive controller. They’re
accompanied by new switchgear and what appears to be quick access buttons.
Performance specifications are still
shrouded in secrecy, but the crossover may offer a turbocharged 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine producing 255 hp and 400 Nm of torque. We can also expect an assortment of other powertrains including
plug-in hybrid and in certain markets, diesel options too.
