New images of BYD’s forthcoming pickup truck have emerged, showing prototypes void of any camouflage, simply adorned with some black tape across a handful of exterior parts. As recent patent images have indicated, it has a design very reminiscent of the Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Ranger. BYD has gone with a very conventional design for its foray into the world of pickup trucks. These photos show that the front end includes a silver skid plate, a blacked-out plastic bumper, and headlights that look like they’ve been purchased from a Ford parts shop. Connecting the headlights will be an LED light bar, although it is covered with tape in these images.
The sides of the BYD also look very
truck-like unsurprisingly, with squared arches, roof rails, bulky wing mirrors,
and side steps. A prominent sports bar also sits above the bed and should add
to the versatility of the truck. Spin around to the rear and there are a pair
of simple taillights and an LED light bar.
While BYD’s exterior designers clearly
left a Ford website tab open while crafting the truck, the cabin looks unlike
any rival on the market. Position in front of the driver is a simple digital
instrument cluster while sitting next to it is a large infotainment screen. We
can also see a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a transmission tunnel with two
large grab handles. There are also plenty of sizeable switches and buttons, a
large gear shifter, and two wireless phone charges. Other highlights include
the red air vent surrounds and the large storage cubby in front of the
passenger where you’d normally expect to find the airbag.
Car News China reports that both plug-in
hybrid and electric versions will be built. The PHEV version is expected to
have a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine working alongside two electric motors
making for approximately 490 hp.
