Rolls-Royce is showcasing the talents of their Bespoke team by unveiling the one-off Spectre Lunaflair. It was commissioned by an American and features a “holographic paint finish that creates a captivating ‘rainbow’ effect.” The ultra-luxury coupe draws inspiration from the lunar halo, where light refracts through ice particles in cirrus clouds to create a technicolor ring around the moon. The car’s unique paint job tries to recreate this effect and it took more than a year to develop.
As Rolls-Royce explained, the “paint
chemistry, application timings, and base coat were extensively trialed in order
to meet the client’s concept.” The extensive trial and error process eventually
led the team to develop a technique that consists of seven layers of lacquer as
well as a specially formulated pearlescent coat. The latter was “infused with
fine flakes of magnesium fluoride and aluminum.” The results speak for
themselves as the model has a deep metallic appearance in low light conditions,
but turns into a ‘technicolor rainbow’ in bright sunlight. The finish is so
colorful, it resembles old school holograms.
Besides the unique paint job, the Spectre
has a unique interior that mixes white with navy blue and peony pink. Rolls-Royce
says this tri-color combination recalls the “spectrum of hues that can be
witnessed during a lunar halo.” Elsewhere, there’s a two-tone steering wheel
and a Starlight headliner. The model also features red accents as well as
illuminated door panels.
Since the Spectre is fully electric, the
Lunaflair features a 102 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers a dual-motor
all-wheel drive system producing 577 hp and 900
Nm of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in 4.4 seconds and have an EPA range of up to 446 km.
The Spectre Lunaflair was partially
inspired by the Phantom Syntopia and Rolls-Royce’s Head of Bespoke Design,
Martina Starke, said “We are constantly astounded by the diversity of ideas
that inform our clients’ Bespoke concepts, which frequently draw inspiration
from materials, finishes and themes they see in other commissions. Spectre
Lunaflair is the perfect example of this, exploring the ethereal beauty of a
lunar halo and sparked by the client after witnessing a paint finish on another
Bespoke motor car.”
