The 2016 GMC Canyon is powered by the same 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine from the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado diesel. This diesel engine produces 181 hp and 500 Nm of torque and is coupled to a Hydra-Matic 6L50 6-speed automatic transmission. It has a trailering rating of 3,492 kg for the 2WD model and 3,447 kg for the 4WD model.

The Duramax 2.8-liter engine is claimed to be one of the cleanest engines ever produced by GM and is also B20-capable. The vehicle itself has been given a “Certificate of Conformity” by the EPA stating that it has no issues or concerns over the testing and evaluation of the emission control system in it.

4WD models get a new electronically controlled two-speed transfer case and a 3.42 rear axle ratio as well as disc brakes all around with Duralife brake rotors as standard.

The 2016 GMC Canyon diesel can also be had with a trailering package that that comprises of a hitch receiver, seven-pin connector and an automatic locking rear differential.
