2017
BMW 5 Series
The
sixth generation BMW 5 Series (F10/F11) has got just about a year before its
retirement. The seventh generation 2017 BMW 5 Series (codenamed BMW G30) is
arriving next year, with a public debut scheduled to happen at 2016 Paris Motor
Show in October, as per a report from Autocar.
The
next-gen model will be offered with more variants than the current model. A
plug-in hybrid powertrain will also be on offer, like the BMW 3 Series and BMW
7 Series. Citing BMW insiders, the report says that the plug-in hybrid
powertrain will have a pure electric range of more than 32 km.
The
OKL (Oberklasse – German for ‘upper class’) platform-based 2017 BMW 5 Series
will be around 100 kg lighter than the model it replaces. It will see usage of
lightweight and strong materials including carbon-fibre, aluminum, magnesium and
high-strength steel. On the inside, the next-gen model will feature a new
digital instrument cluster and the fifth generation iDrive infotainment system
currently offered in the 7 Series.
According
to the report, the engine options will include differently tuned versions of
the latest B47 diesel and B48 petrol 2.0-litre four-cylinder units for the base
models. The B57 diesel and B58 petrol 3.0-litre six-cylinder units will top
them. The most powerful engines to be offered are said to be a 444 bhp 4.4-litre
twin-turbo V8 petrol and a new 3.0-litre (B57) quad-turbo V6 diesel. The
engines will be mated to either a 6-speed manual and a new 9-speed automatic
transmission.
The
next-gen BMW 5 Series Touring (G31) and BMW 5 Series GT (G32), as per the
publication’s sources, should appear at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and 2017
Frankfurt Motor Show (2017 IAA).
