Porsche 718 2.0 and 2.5 turbo
The Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman
due next year will be offered with newly developed 2.0 and 2.5 turbocharged
gasoline engines.
Autocar had the opportunity to take the 718
Boxster for a quick spin and managed to find out it will have a flat-four unit
codenamed “9A2B4T.” It has a single turbo and is capable of developing
approximately 300 hp and 349 Nm of torque, with the
redline set at a little over 7,400 rpm.
As for the Boxster S and Cayman S, the
engine in these two will have a 2.4- or 2.5-liter displacement and power will
stand at around 360 hp and 400 Nm. The turbocharger in
this engine could use Porsche's proprietary Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) as
implemented in the 911 Turbo.
According to Matthias Hofstetter, head
of 718 powertrain development, engine packaging was a bit tricky. Ultimately,
the job was done after the two front cylinders of the old engine were replaced
by the turbocharger. The engine modifications have brought a bump in weight for
the Boxster from 1,309 kg to 1,400 kg, but even so
performance is great. The standard Boxster model jumps to 100 km/h in
5.5 seconds whereas the Boxster S needs just 5 seconds. Thanks to downsizing,
fuel efficiency has increased by about 4 mpg (1 liter / 100 km less than
before).
Both models will be revealed early next
year, with a public debut likely to take place in March during the Geneva Motor
Show.
