Range Rovers and hunting go together
like tea and crumpets. After all, the first Range Rovers were designed to be
luxurious, high-capability sport-utes for well-heeled English outdoorsmen who’d
outgrown their Series IIs. Keeping the tradition is the latest fruits of the
nameplate’s partnership with bespoke gunmaker Holland & Holland.
Based on the SVAutobiography, the
Holland & Holland Range Rover is Land Rover’s fourth collaboration with the
queen's own weapons manufacturer. At US$ 244,500, it’s also the company’s priciest
model ever. Last year’s H&H was based on the Autobiography Black, but the
company replaced that range-topper with the SVAutobiography midway through
2015. Making 40 more horsepower and 41 lb-ft more than a standard Range Rover
Supercharged, the SVAutobiography puts out 550 hp and 502 units of twist, more
than enough for the aluminum-intensive SUV.
Holland & Holland adds to the
high-lux Range Rover by adding its signature green paint to the exterior, with
a body-color grille and door handles. Holland & Holland badging shows up on
the side vents and tailgate, as well.
Inside, the SVAutobiography’s
already-sumptuous fittings have been replaced with nicer bits, including French
walnut veneers that match the wood used to manufacture Holland & Holland
gunstocks, espresso and tan interior leather unique to the model, and a
removable, leather-trimmed gun case fit to the rear cargo area. This year’s
H&H still comes with the beautiful, specially engraved interior brightwork
featuring the gun company’s signature “acanthus scroll” design.
With just 30 units headed to the United
States this spring, don’t ever plan on seeing a Holland & Holland Range
Rover in person unless you’re the guy putting it in your garage at its
quarter-million base price. For the rest of us, daydreaming is still free.
