Chevrolet Camaro SS 50th Anniversary Edition

Chevrolet’s Camaro SS 50th Anniversary will be the pace car for the 100th Indianapolis 500 race event. It will be driven by racing legend Roger Penske, who is also celebrating 50 years as a race team owner; man, that’s a lot of anniversaries.

This will be also the ninth time we see a Camaro as a pace car in the race and the 27th time for Chevrolet.

“Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500 have a long, storied history and it’s an honor to mark the respective milestones of the Indy 500 race and the Camaro simultaneously,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development and Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “It’s also a privilege to have Roger Penske perform the driving duties, as his team has helped Chevrolet earn four consecutive IndyCar manufacturer titles since 2012.”

Chevrolet will have four Camaros running as pace cars in total to support the race, painted in the exclusive Abalone White with ‘100th Running of the Indianapolis 500’ decals on the doors and the iconic logo of the track on the quarter panels.

Penske’s story with the Indy 500 started back in 1969, with Donohue as his driver. Legends like Mario Andretti, Al Unser and Rick Mears have driven for him over the years, with the latter winning the Indy 500 no less four times. Last year it was Juan Pablo Montoya’s first place which brought the 16th Indy 500 victory for Team Penske, with the team looking for their 17th at this year’s event.
