2018 Tata Safari (render)
Tata is developing a flagship product based on a
Land Rover platform, codenamed Tata Q501/Q502. Rushlane has created a rendering
of what the product could look like, and baphtized it as the next generation
Tata Safari.
The rendering combines cues from the current Tata
Safari, Tata Hexa and Land Rover Discovery Sport. It’s unlikely that designers
will settle for a product that bears resemblance to the Discovery Sport, as
older reports have suggested that the Tata product will have its own design and
identity.
It is reported to pack the Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter
MultiJet II diesel engine that produces 170 bhp, and could be available with a
6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The same engine is likely to
be shared with the Jeep C-Segment SUV (codename Jeep 551). So, the two companies could explore the
possibility of locally assembling this engine and benefit from lower costs.
The Land Rover platform-based Tata SUV is reported
to go on sale in 2018. It will be Tata’s boldest attempt at entering a premium
segment and rival the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe.
