The first spy shots of the 2019 Mercedes GLS have
landed, allowing us a first look on the upcoming Range Rover and BMW X7
rival. The new German full-size SUV will
offer room for up to seven passengers and will ride on a new platform called
MHA, which will be shared with the also upcoming and smaller GLE.
One of the key benefits of adopting the new platform
will be a significant weight saving, with the new generation GLS also expected
to offer improved road manners and compatibility with Daimler’s latest
semi-autonomous technology.
The engine range will be wide enough to cover all
needs and tastes, meaning it’ll include four-, six- and eight-cylinder units.
Some of them will be offered as hybrids, paired with an electric motor while
the inline sixes will be the same with the latest S-Class.
More demanding customers will of course be offered
at least one proper AMG version, powered by the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in two
power versions, which has become sort-of the norm for high-performance Mercs.
Mercedes’ take on the Range Rover and the also awaited BMW X7 is expected to
show up in 2019.
