Honda brought along its new generation Civic diesel
to the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Naturally, it doesn’t really stand out next
to its sonorous sibling, the Civic Type R, but the new Honda Civic diesel
promises to get the job done, despite the bad reputation that oil burners have
received lately in the Old Continent and elsewhere, no thanks to the emissions
scandal.
Powering it is a 1.6-liter engine, built
specifically with the European market in mind, in Swindon, England, which
delivers 120 hp and 300 Nm of torque to the front wheels. It won't
break any speed records, as it needs 10.4 sec for the 0-100 km/h acceleration, but it returns 3.7 l/100 km (76.3 UK mpg / 63.6 US mpg), and
emits just 99 g/km of CO2.
Honda has yet to detail the market availability of
their new diesel unit, but it will be offered on the four- and five-door
versions of the compact car, in the United Kingdom at least, from March, 2018.
The powertrain will be married to a 9-speed automatic gearbox as
well, starting next summer.
