Mercedes has started testing the Maybach version of
the upcoming GLS on public roads and of course our spies were there to catch
them in the act. While it’s not exactly the production version of the Maybach Ultimate
Luxury Concept that debuted at this year’s Beijing Auto Show, the
Mercedes-Maybach GLS is expected to share more than a few design details with
it, before entering the super-luxury SUV game against models like the Bentley
Bentayga and the Rolls Royce Cullinan.
The new Maybach SUV will be
based on the upcoming generation of the GLS but is expected to further
differentiate itself with unique exterior details and a much plusher interior
that may include a model-specific dashboard design, featuring leather, wood and
metal details.
On the outside, the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS is set
to get a new front grille that will become a trademark of future Maybach
models, unique bumpers and wheels, as well as extended chrome detailing.
As the most expensive Mercedes SUV, the Maybach GLS
will most likely be offered with the AMG-developed twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8
engine while some reports suggest the use of a plug-in hybrid powertrain that
uses the very same engine in its heart. The V8 engine is currently used by
almost every Mercedes model in the range.
Mercedes will focus on tuning the upcoming Maybach
models to offer the smoothest ride. The carmaker is developing a more advanced
version of their Magic Body Control system, using a new camera setup that will
help in detecting surface changes ahead with better precision and adjust the
suspension accordingly.
Earlier reports suggest that we could see the new
Mercedes-Maybach GLS as soon as this month, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. If
true, expect Mercedes to reveal not only the posh Maybach SUV but the lesser
versions of the new GLS full-size SUV.
