Audi is busy expanding its SUV lineup with as many
models and derivatives as possible. The Q2 is
no exception. Following the SQ2 performance version revealed at the Paris Auto Show
and the long-wheelbase Q2 L for China, we now have proof Audi is also working
on an all-electric variant. Csrscoops photographers spotted an Audi Q2 e-tron
prototype in Germany for the first time, confirming a report from earlier this
year.
Well, the grille typical to e-tron models is a strong clue, as is the
different design of the front bumper. A closer look reveals that the
upper half of the grille is closed since EV’s don’t need as much cooling as
combustion-engined cars. As for the black boomerang-shaped plastic trims on
each side of the front bumper, they probably hide the LED DRLs.
Another important hint is the lack of exhaust pipes
at the rear. Still, some may argue that there are plenty of models with
gasoline and diesel engines that have hidden or fake tailpipes. Interestingly, the Q2 prototype’s
roof is covered up with white foil. It might
be because it’s trying to hide the Q2 e-tron’s solar panels. Solar cells give
electric vehicles a much needed power supplement to help charge the batteries,
extending driving range in the process.
There is no information at the moment regarding the
Q2 e-tron’s powertrain and battery pack. However, rumor has it the driving
range will reach up to 500 km. The Q2 e-tron is also said to use
the China-exclusive long-wheelbase body but based on these photos alone we
can’t say if that’s true. If the Q2 e-tron does feature the longer body of the
Chinese model, will it be available outside China as well? Only time and Audi will tell.
