The HGK Racing Team has just unveiled their Toyota Supra drift car that’s been in the works for the past 12 months. The team, based in Riga, Latvia, started out with a standard Mk5 Supra before stripping it down and beginning the long process of overhauling it into a car that can spend its days being drifted at dizzying speeds without encountering any issues.
The first thing that may strike you about
this Supra is the green/yellow tinge to its exterior. This isn’t an odd paint
scheme; the bodywork is made exclusively from a mixture of carbon fiber and
Kevlar, which gives it its unique hue while also ensuring it is strong and
light. Speaking of the body, it has also been overhauled with flared front and
rear wheel arches, extended side skirts, a bespoke front end and a unique rear.
To keep the weight down, the glass windows were replaced by ones made of Lexan.
Elsewhere, HGK Racing Team has outfitted
the car with a unique suspension system, a new steering column, and powerful
Wilwood brakes. As standard, the BMW-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged
six-cylinder of the Supra can be upgraded quite easily. However, the racing
squad decided to remove this engine and have replaced it with Toyota’s
legendary 2JZ-GTE with two turbochargers and a host of upgrades that now see it
churn out 1,000 hp. Coupled to the engine is a Samsonas sequential transmission
with a twin-disc clutch driving the rear wheels.
