VW continues to test the all-electric ID.BUZZ van and a lightly disguised prototype was recently snapped out and about in snowy European conditions. This prototype is of the passenger version of the ID.BUZZ, rather than the commercial variant that will also be sold to customers. It is completely free of camouflage and only has some stickers over parts of the headlights and taillights. While it certainly looks similar, it has undergone a number of modifications from the original concept unveiled at the start of 2017.
Viewed from the front, we can see that the
production-spec ID.BUZZ has LED headlights with pronounced daytime running
lights and a light bar. The lower front grille is also significantly smaller
than the original concept and is finished in all black. A pair of circular fog
lights are also visible. The side profile of the ID.BUZZ is also quite
intriguing. There is a strong character line stretching from the corner of the
headlights through to the taillights. We can also see a small charging port on
the driver’s side front quarter panel as well as thick black surrounds around
the side windows, making them look larger than they actually are.
As for the rear of the ID.BUZZ prototype,
we can see aggressive LED taillights and a tow ball. Underpinning the VW
ID.BUZZ will be the automaker’s MEB platform and it is expected to be offered
in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The model range is expected to
start out with a single motor variant producing about 200 horsepower while a
dual-motor model could be good for 365 horsepower.
We’ll see the production-ready model
making its world premiere late next year, with European sales to start shortly
after, while North America will have to wait until 2023, though deliveries may
be pushed to early 2024.
