The old-gen Beijing BJ212 off-roader was discontinued earlier this year, but the next generation is already near, as evidenced by a trio of official teasers. The images depict an SUV largely identical to its predecessor, but with some Land Rover Defender design cues thrown in. It is still built around a frame and retains a solid beam at the rear end.
The new BJ212 features an all-metal body
construction and comes packed with modern electronic systems and options, such
as LED headlights. The engine range remains to be revealed, though. The old
generation came equipped with 1.5L and 2.4L gasoline turbos available with
five- and six-speed manual gearboxes and a part-time AWD system.
BAIC announced last September that it
would soon get rid of 65 press forms used to produce the SUV, and that it only
had 1,344 units left to ship from the factory. The BJ212 has a long history
that can be traced all the way back to 1965. Beijing introduced it as a
replacement for the Soviet-designed GAZ-69 model it had been assembling for
China earlier.
The BJ212 received a facelift last spring but the viability of the update seems
dubious now that it went out of production, anyway.
