Spy photographers have snapped a mysterious new crossover near Ford’s Dearborn Development Center. Dressed in heavy camouflage, the prototype features a thick mesh grille that is flanked by sizable headlights. We can also see a relatively flat hood and a large front overhang. Continuing further back, there are flush-mounted door handles and a flowing beltline. They’re joined by a sloping roof, a pronounced shoulder line, and streamlined bodywork.
There isn’t much to see in the rear, but
the crossover has a liftgate-mounted spoiler and a single exhaust tip. The
model also sports temporary taillights and an angular rear window. It’s hard to
judge the model’s size based on the photos, but the crossover is expected to be
smaller than the Explorer. However, it’s still pretty big and may be large
enough to accommodate a third-row seat.
That remains to be seen, but this
prototype raises a number of questions and we’re not entirely sure what it is.
However, spy photographers believe it could be the reborn Fusion / Mondeo with
a crossover body designed to appeal to Americans.
Spy photographers went on to note
similarities to the Chinese Evos, but Ford has been adamant that model “is for
customers in China only.” Of course, there’s nothing stopping the automaker
from changing the body and slapping a new name on it. That being said, only one
thing is certain at this point, and that is Ford is working on a new crossover.
