Spy photographers have snapped a new mule, which they believe is a tester for the upcoming Polestar 4. The mule is a mixture of a Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40. The styling of the latter is pretty pronounced, but a closer inspection reveals a longer wheelbase as the front tires are pushed forward while the rear wheels have been shoved back.
The changes don’t stop there as the mule
sports a wider track and extended fender flares. The prototype also rides low
to the ground and that’s not surprising as Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath has
previously said the 4 will adopt a “ground-hugging” design with a “coupe-type
roofline.” We can also see lightweight wheels and beefy brakes, which suggest
the mule foreshadows a performance-focused variant.
Polestar hasn’t gone into many specifics,
but Ingenlath has said the 4 will be “slightly smaller” than the 3 and likely
become the brand’s best-selling model. That shouldn’t be too surprising as the
4 is slated to start around € 55,000 (US$ 61,663/ £ 45,991), which would make it
nearly € 20,000 (US$ 22,422 / £ 16,726) less expensive than the 3.
Plenty of questions remain, but the
Polestar 4 is slated to be introduced next year and compete with the electric
Porsche Macan. Previous reports have suggested the model will be built in China
and ride on the PMA platform, which is said to be a version of Geely’s
Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).
