DeLorean kept its promise and unveiled a full-size model of the Alpha5 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This is the first public outing of the fully electric 2+2 grand tourer following the digital unveiling back in May and ahead of its market launch that is expected for 2024. The real-life prototype of the Delorean Alpha5 is painted in an orange/salmon shade, combined with glossy black accents. The 2+2 interior is black, featuring matching touches on the bucket seats. Unfortunately, DeLorean has only shared a few low-resolution photos from the event, but visitors have uploaded videos online showing the Alpha5 on the move. The EV might be in concept form but it appears to be fully functional, driving up the hill before stopping at the dedicated platform.
The DeLorean Alpha5, penned by ItalDesign,
features large gullwing doors inspired by the iconic DMC-12, which was also the
source of inspiration for the three-layer LED taillights and the vented rear
windscreen. The aerodynamic silhouette and the fluid lines however are a
departure from the boxier shape of its predecessor, and the stainless steel
finish is gone. The V-shaped illuminated elements on the front and rear bumpers
are styled after the shape of the opened gullwing doors which also integrate
LEDs. The Alpha5 is longer and wider than a Porsche Taycan with a length of
4,995 mm and a width of 2,044 mm. It is also quite
low, with a height of 1,370 mm contributing to the dramatic proportions
in combination with the massive aero-style wheels.
The grand tourer is based on a yet-unknown
EV architecture, with all-wheel-drive capability, and powerful electric motors
allowing a 0-96 km/h acceleration in 2.99 seconds and a projected
top speed of 250 km/h. According to DeLorean, the estimated range is 483 km thanks to a 100 kWh battery. The Alpha5 will also come
fitted with a multi-mode adaptive suspension. Last month, DeLorean unveiled a
trio of fictional concept cars, including an ICE-powered sportscar, an electric
hatchback flagship, and a hydrogen-powered SUV. Those are “what if” moments
from the previous decades, trying to establish a fictional heritage for the
Alpha5. The company announced it will showcase the three concepts at Pebble
Beach alongside the Alpha5, following a preview in a video teaser. DeLorean
plans for expanding its lineup following the market launch of the Alpha5 in
2024, with new models covering a wider spectrum of body styles.
The debut of the DeLorean Alpha5 at Pebble
Beach comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Karma, accusing four high-ranked
officials of the newly established company – including its CEO – of stealing
intellectual property as all of them were ex-Karma employees.
