The GAC Trumpchi Emkoo has officially launched in China as one of the nation’s most eye-catching SUVs. Previewed back in April, the Emkoo measures 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, stands 1,670 mm tall, and has a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Local prices kick off at 132,000 Yuan (US$ 19,451) and top out at 172,000 Yuan (US$ 25,345).
The front of the Emkoo is characterized by
aggressive LED headlights and daytime running lights that have been paired with
a very intriguing grille, dominated by steeply-angled strakes that make the
Emkoo stand out. The side profile of the vehicle is also quite intriguing, in
particular the black body cladding and flared arches, the pop-out door handles,
and the thick, angular C-pillars. Key design details of the rear include the
fixed roof spoiler, the LED taillights, a pronounced diffuser, and rectangular
exhaust outlets.
The Trumpchi
Emkoo is underpinned by GAC’s Global Platform Modular Architecture. The
entry-level model comes standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine
producing 177 hp and 270 Nm of torque that’s coupled to a
seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Those after a little more power can opt
for the Emkoo’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pumping out 252 hp and 400 Nm of torque which is mated to an eight-speed automatic
transmission.
Topping out the range is a hybrid
powertrain that pairs a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 140 hp
and 180 Nm alongside an electric motor, resulting in a combined 238
hp. Importantly, this version is not a plug-in hybrid and only sports a small
2.1 kWh battery pack.
Found in the cabin of the Emkoo is a
7-inch digital instrument cluster on entry-level models, although a larger
10.25-inch display is available on higher-end versions. In addition, all Emkoo
variants have a 14.6-inch central infotainment screen, a flat-bottomed steering
wheel, and switches in place of traditional door handles.
