The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class family is finally welcoming its first plug-in hybrid member. Dubbed the S 580 e, it will originally only be available in China, but Europe and other regions will be getting it later. The full reveal is still some days away, and we only have these two exterior photos to look at in the meantime. Judging by them, the car is styled completely in line with the other Maybachs. The wheels, the bumpers and the radiator grille are all very similar to what we have seen before.
As for the powertrain, we suspect it could
be identical to the one powering the current Mercedes-Benz S 580 e
(non-Maybach). It consists of a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine turbocharged to
367 PS and 500 Nm of torque and an electric motor
integrated into a nine-speed automatic transmission. The motor contributes 150
PS of its own, letting the system output a maximum of 510 PS and 750 Nm.
The current S 580 e sedan needs 5.1
seconds to launch itself from standstill to 100 km/h and maxes out
upon hitting 250 km/h. It offers up to 100 km of driving
range in all-electric mode.
