Mercedes-AMG is giving spy photographers a break as they’ve released pictures of the PureSpeed roadster undergoing final testing. Previewed by a concept in May, the production model is based on the SL and is the first member of the exclusive Mythos series. Mercedes didn’t have much to say about the car, but the prototypes appear virtually identical to the concept. As a result, they’re bound to draw attention as they lack a roof and windscreen.
The unique design is a homage to racing and that isn’t the only motorsport-inspired touch as the car has an F1-inspired Halo system. It’s designed to protect occupants in the event of an accident, although pictures show the driver’s head above the bar. That’s far from ideal, but Mercedes noted the model comes with two aerodynamically optimized helmets for additional protection.
The pictures only provide a glimpse of the
cabin, but it appears to largely carryover from the standard model. This means
we can expect a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as an 11.9-inch
infotainment system. However, there will be a few special touches including a
dashboard-mounted clock by IWC Schaffhausen.
We can expect to learn more in the coming
months, but Mercedes said the model is being put through its paces in northern
Italy and will eventually undergo high-speed testing at the Nardò Ring.
Prototypes are slated to travel more than 3,000 km as part of the
program and the development team is focused on fine-tuning handling as well as
ensuring the “functionality and interaction of all systems and components.”
Production is limited to 250 units and the
company has said they’ll only be available to the “most dedicated Mercedes‑Benz enthusiasts and collectors.”
