2018 Ford Mustang Convertible

Paultan's spy photographers have caught a number of camouflaged ‘stangs out on the road, and the latest has been a drop-top example – the Ford Mustang Convertible in the photos was sighted doing road trials in Dearborn, Michigan. The heavy disguise means there’s not much to be gleaned in terms of exterior revisions, but it does look like the apertures for the grille will be revised for the facelift.

The design changes are expected to be minor rather than radical, though new special editions and trim packages are said to be on the cards to give buyers more options. Most of the rework will be under the skin.

New elements on the facelift are expected to be led by the company’s new 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission, which will replace the ZF-based 6R80 six-speeder currently in use. The new ‘box, a collaborative effort with GM, is already seen in its GM-based application on the Chevrolet Camaro. As for the Getrag MT-82 manual, that should continue on unchanged.

It was previously mentioned that the new gearbox hasn’t been confirmed for Europe as yet, but word is that the it will almost certainly be added to European cars several months later. As is the case right now, there won’t be a 3.7 litre Cylcone V6 model sitting in between the 2.3 litre EcoBoost four and 5.0 litre Coyote V8 for Europe. In fact, it remains to be seen if the Cyclone will be retained on the facelift for domestic market.
