The 2017 Audi S5 Coupe is here to sit atop the A5
range with extra sporting intent and even more equipment. The all-new S5 Coupe
model has done away with its supercharged engine, opting instead for a
3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol unit with 354 Hp of power from
5400-6400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1370-4500 rpm. It has quattro all-wheel
drive, and a standard-fit eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox.
Audi claims the new model can sprint from 0-100 km/h
in just 4.7 seconds – the same as the old V8-powered Audi RS4 could manage, and
only 0.2 sec slower than the previous-gen RS5 Coupe. Fuel use is
better in the new model, too, with the claim dipping to 7.5 litres per 100
kilometres. Previously it was 7.7L/100km.
The best news for
buyers is the price – the all-new model is AUD 105,800 plus on-road costs, where
the previous one, which had a lot less equipment (AUD 10K less), was AUD 122,615. This isn’t the hottest A5-derived model, however. There’ll be the all-new Audi
RS5 later this year – so if you want the most hardcore version, you may want to
wait.
Standard equipment is extensive, too, with Audi’s
Virtual Cockpit 12.3-inch driver information/media/nav/trip unit fitted in all
models at no cost, while the 8.3-inch dash-top infotainment screen with MMI
Touch rotary dial controller features plenty of goodies like Google Maps
display, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, dual USB ports, Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto, and Audi Connect mobile internet capabilities.
Standard safety kit on the A5 Coupe range is
extensive, and includes a 360-degree camera, parking sensors all around,
autonomous emergency braking, driver drowsiness monitoring, tyre pressure
monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, an exit warning
system that will tell you using the ambient lighting in the door to tell you if
there’s a car/motorbike/cyclist coming up beside you, and six airbags (dual
front, front side, full-length curtains). It has received the maximum five-star
ANCAP safety rating, too.
Further, the S5 Coupe gets Audi’s Assistance pack,
with adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, active lane keeping,
high-speed AEB, turn assist (will prevent you from turning in front of oncoming
traffic), distance warning, predictive efficiency assistance (monitors GPS data
and adjusts engine for hills, corners), and high-beam assist.
Audi is offering a range of options for buyers,
including the Technik package, with head-up display, Matrix LED headlights,
Bang & Olufsen sound system for AUD 5600, and other sporty boxes to be ticked
include the quattro sport differential (AUD 2950) and dynamic variable ratio
steering (AUD 2210). You can get a sunroof for AUD 2850, and there’s a gloss black
exterior highlight package available at AUD 1430.
